Sant Maithilisharan Ji Maharaj: The Miraculous Life of Ayodhya’s Siddha Saint

The extraordinary story of a saint whose devotion transformed his marriage into a spiritual journey, whose service at Kanak Bhavan continued for eight years, and who, according to a revered spiritual account, received the personal darshan of Lord Dwarkadhish.

Can devotion become so powerful that the mere touch of a saint’s feet brings visions of the Divine? Can a newly married couple renounce worldly pleasures on their wedding night and dedicate their entire lives to God? And can the Lord Himself appear in human form to accept the humble offering of a devotee?

The extraordinary life of Sant Maithilisharan Ji Maharaj brings together all these remarkable questions.

According to the account narrated by Most Revered Shri Swami Devadas Ji Maharaj, Sant Maithilisharan Ji was an accomplished Siddha saint who spent approximately seventy-five to eighty years in the sacred city of Ayodhya.

He established Yugal Madhuri Kunj in the Nazarbagh locality of Ayodhya, where his life became a living expression of devotion, renunciation, and divine service.

It is said that when he sat in his temple during the evening, twenty to forty distinguished saints would gather around him. His spiritual presence was considered so powerful that devotees naturally became absorbed in contemplation of Lord Rama and His divine pastimes.

Some devotees reportedly experienced profound spiritual visions merely by touching his feet.

But the beginning of this extraordinary journey was even more remarkable.

    A Childhood Dedicated to God

Sant Maithilisharan Ji Maharaj was born in Bundelkhand.

From childhood, he displayed little interest in ordinary worldly activities. He spoke very little and preferred to remain absorbed in the remembrance of God.

While his family expected him to marry and lead a conventional household life, his heart longed for spiritual freedom.

Whenever marriage was discussed, he quietly withdrew from the conversation.

Meanwhile, in the same region lived a young woman who had also developed an extraordinary inclination toward devotion. She had resolved to remain celibate throughout her life.

However, both families wished to arrange their marriages.

Eventually, through an unusual turn of circumstances, these two spiritually inclined individuals were married to one another.

Neither knew that their wedding night would become the beginning of an extraordinary spiritual journey.

The Wedding Night That Changed Two Lives Forever

After the wedding ceremonies, the young bride arrived at Maithilisharan Ji’s family home.

According to the traditional account, both husband and wife independently wished to preserve their celibacy and devote their lives entirely to God.

When Maithilisharan Ji entered the room, his wife respectfully folded her hands and expressed her deepest wish.

She believed that human life was a precious opportunity for devotion and asked whether he would support her spiritual aspirations.

Hearing her words, Maithilisharan Ji was overwhelmed with emotion.

He revealed that he, too, had been praying for precisely such a life.

His wife then made an extraordinary proposal: once everyone had fallen asleep, they should quietly leave their home and travel to Ayodhya.

That very night, the newly married couple departed from Bundelkhand.

They began their journey toward the sacred city on foot.

Their marriage had become not a bond of worldly attachment, but a partnership in spiritual renunciation.

    The Sacred Journey to Ayodhya

The couple travelled through villages with little concern for worldly comfort.

According to the narration, villagers welcomed them with remarkable affection, offering food, water, and respectful hospitality.

    Eventually, they reached Ayodhya.

Upon arriving, they bowed to the sacred earth and proceeded toward the famous Kanak Bhavan Temple.

Standing before the beautiful form of the Lord, both became overwhelmed with devotion.

Tears flowed from their eyes as they silently prayed for the opportunity to spend their lives serving God.

What happened next would determine the direction of their entire spiritual journey.

Eight Days of Temple Service That Became Eight Years

The priest of Kanak Bhavan needed to travel to Jaipur for his granddaughter’s wedding.

He expected to remain away for approximately eight days and required someone to perform the temple worship during his absence.

After learning that Maithilisharan Ji was a Brahmin, the priest entrusted him with the service of the deity.

For the couple, this was an extraordinary blessing.

They began serving Kanak Bhavan Bihari Ji with complete dedication.

However, according to the account, circumstances repeatedly delayed the priest’s return.

Eight days passed, then months, and eventually years.

The priest who had departed for eight days returned after eight years.

During this period, Maithilisharan Ji and his wife became widely respected for their devotion.

Thousands of devotees reportedly developed affection and reverence for them.

When the original priest finally returned, the couple respectfully handed back the temple keys and all responsibilities.

Although they were deeply saddened at losing the opportunity for daily service, they accepted the situation without resentment.

Their surrender to the Divine was complete.

The Establishment of Yugal Madhuri Kunj

The devotees of Ayodhya were deeply moved by the couple’s separation from their beloved temple service.

They decided to establish another temple where Maithilisharan Ji could continue worshipping the Lord.

Thus, Yugal Madhuri Kunj was established in Nazarbagh, Ayodhya.

A form of the Lord resembling the original deity of Kanak Bhavan was installed there.

Maithilisharan Ji resumed his life of worship, meditation, and spiritual guidance.

His wife was equally renowned for her renunciation.

Devotees brought gold, silver, expensive garments, sweets, and other offerings, but she never regarded these gifts as personal possessions.

Everything was dedicated to the service of Thakur Ji.

Their lives demonstrated a central principle of bhakti: genuine devotion is expressed through surrender rather than possession.

The Mysterious Young Priest of Dwarkapuri

Among the most extraordinary incidents associated with Sant Maithilisharan Ji Maharaj is his reported encounter with Lord Dwarkadhish.

On one occasion, Maithilisharan Ji and his wife travelled from Vrindavan to Dwarkapuri.

They carried simple food offerings for the Lord, including millet bread, pickle, butter, and peda sweets from Gokul.

However, the temple priests did not accept their humble offerings.

For several days, Maithilisharan Ji attempted to present the food, but without success.

Finally, deeply disappointed, he decided to return to Ayodhya.

At that moment, an exceptionally handsome young boy, apparently fifteen or sixteen years old, approached him.

The boy introduced himself as a new priest and offered to take the food inside the temple.

He lovingly presented the offerings before the Lord and returned a portion as prasad.

    Maithilisharan Ji was delighted.

He returned to his lodging, where his wife asked him an unusual question.

Had he recognised the young priest?

Maithilisharan Ji explained that he had simply met a kind young temple servant.

His wife then revealed something astonishing.

According to her spiritual perception, the young priest was none other than Lord Dwarkadhish Himself.

Maithilisharan Ji initially struggled to accept this explanation.

The following day, he returned to the temple determined to find the young priest.

When Lord Dwarkadhish Revealed His Divine Form

Maithilisharan Ji carried fine silk garments, dry fruits, and eleven silver rupees as an offering for the young priest who had helped him.

However, the temple authorities insisted that no such young priest worked there.

All four priests were called before him.

    None resembled the mysterious boy.

Confused, Maithilisharan Ji turned his gaze toward the deity.

At that very moment, according to the sacred narration, he perceived within the divine form of Lord Dwarkadhish the same beautiful face that had appeared before him the previous evening.

He finally understood the significance of his encounter.

The Lord had personally accepted the humble offering that others had refused.

Overwhelmed by devotion, Maithilisharan Ji wept.

This incident is remembered as a powerful illustration of the belief that God responds not to material grandeur, but to the sincerity of a devotee’s heart.

The Saint Who Spoke of the Future

Sant Maithilisharan Ji Maharaj was also remembered by his followers as a Trikaldarshi, a spiritually accomplished person believed to possess knowledge of the past, present, and future.

One incident narrated by Swami Devadas Ji concerns the Indian presidency.

A learned Pandit approached Maithilisharan Ji and explained that he intended to perform a recitation of the Valmiki Ramayana to prevent Dr. Zakir Husain from becoming President of India.

Maithilisharan Ji discouraged him from using sacred recitation to fulfil such a worldly political desire.

He warned that when spiritual practices are performed solely for a specific material outcome, disappointment may weaken a person’s faith.

The saint reportedly predicted that Zakir Husain would become President.

The narration also attributes to him an explanation of Zakir Husain’s previous birth, describing him as a temple priest who had performed extensive worship and recitation of the Valmiki Ramayana.

This account of a previous birth belongs to the saint’s traditional spiritual biography and should be understood as a religious narrative rather than an independently established historical fact.

Dr. Zakir Husain did become President of India and died while serving in office.

The narration further describes a symbolic remark attributed to Maithilisharan Ji concerning the succeeding presidency, which devotees later interpreted as a prediction of V. V. Giri’s rise to office.

These stories contributed to his reputation among followers as a saint possessing extraordinary spiritual insight.
